I look at my son, Jude, everyday and I'm always so amazed. He is barely two and he already talks and interacts like a 10-year old. He has his own personality and sense of humor and he has an incredible ability to make me feel joy just by existing. Even when I have to get on to him,I still absolutely love him. And it's so strange, even though I've only known him for two years, I can't picture my life without him. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that I value his life above my own. Of course I do; he's mine!
In Romans 5:8, God shows us love that is far greater even than my love for Jude. It says that, "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." WOW! That's amazing love! (See what I did there?) But its even more amazing than it sounds. First, think of the love of Jesus. He took on all of our sin. He accepted his role in our salvation. He knowingly gave himself over to be tortured and to die for us even while we were still consumed by sin. Think about that. He gave his life of perfection for ours despite our unworthiness. That's love!
But there's more. God loves Jesus like I love Jude, only to the power of infinity. In John 17:23, Jesus himself acknowledges this by saying, "Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." And yet, I could never, ever love a stranger like I love Jude. It's not possible. Moreover, I could never love a stranger enough to sacrifice Jude for them, but by giving Jesus as a gift to the world, who were strangers to God because of sin, that is exactly what he did. He sacrificed what he loved most to pay for my sin, and to pay for your sin. So even if you are reading this and you do not believe in or accept his son, Jesus, God still loved you enough that he gave his son over to die just for you and the opportunity for you to be saved.
I call this post Amazing Love because the love of God is strange and amazing. Because of it, I call myself a child of God. Because of it, my sins are covered and atoned for. Because God sent his son, I don't have to. That's a love so amazing that it can, has, and will continue to change the world!
