Love God

In Matthew 22:36-37, we see a showdown between the Jewish Pharisees and Jesus. They questioned his claims as the son of God, and of course he showed them the proof over and over. But in this particular passage, they, knowing the law, sought to catch Jesus "with his pants down," so to speak when they asked, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?" He replied boldly and without a moments hesitation saying, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind."

Once again he was beyond their feeble tests. His word had breathed the law into existence and his life was a fulfillment of the law. Moreover, Jesus came to earth as the son of God. That is why, in Romans 8 it tells us that we can cry "Abba Father," meaning daddy! With Jesus, we all became children of the living God and that's reason to love him.

But you may ask, what about those who were commanded to love God and hold him above all others even before Jesus life, death, and resurrection? God just seems so mean in the Old Testament.

God was our creator and redeemer from the very first sentence in Genesis. God has never nor will he ever change. I heard a minister once joke that some Christians believe God got saved in the New Testament. It's a funny statement but it is often how we view the text because our eyes are veiled to the truth. God's love is evident in every verse of the entire Bible, and yet, his rule of law is supreme and he is bound to justice for his own names sake. Because of this, the law was given to show humanity their need for a savior, and then, through Jesus perfect sacrifice, we can now be saved. The Bible says in John 3:16 that "God so Loved the world the He GAVE his only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."

We love God because he has given us a marvelous world to live in. We love God because of his perfect justice. We love God because the earth is filled with his blessings. And most importantly, we love God because he loves us! This line will be used a lot in our posts and throughout our site because it is a truth that we cling to, so I'll say it again; That love can change the world.
